The Dragon Slayer

So the great dragon was thrown out—the ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the one who deceives the whole world.

Revelation 12:9

Submitting to God’s Plan

David was just a boy tending sheep when he slew Goliath – a ferocious warrior that towered over all others and had killed a multitude of David’s countrymen. Little did he know then that he would be King of Israel. David was a musician and songwriter, as well as a man of many flaws. A sinner whose heart desperately loved God and sought Him. The brutal honesty as much as the poetic praise we see in David’s songs to God show us that. Despite David’s flaws, despite the tumultuous relationship he had with Saul, despite the attempts on his life, despite anything Satan would do to try and interfere, God’s plan for David would not be thwarted. The Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, the Messiah, Jesus would come from his line, (Revelation 5:5).

When Mary was just a child, little did she know she would be the mother of the Son of God. I can only imagine what Mary went through finding herself with child, and not yet married. The rumors, the way people would treat her. An offense like this was subject to being stoned to death. What would Joseph do? Would her parents believe her when she told them an angel visited her? Yet what did Mary say, her very first reaction, after the angel explained how she, a virgin, would come to be with child and who this child is? She said,

I am the Lord’s servant…May it happen to me as you have said.

Luke 1:38

Mary was devoted to the will of God and whatever role she had to play in it. We see her love for Him in the Bible here, and other scriptures, like her song of praise when she visits Elizabeth, (Luke 1: 46-55). Despite any doubts, despite the scandal, despite the oppressive Roman rulers, despite no room in the Inn, despite anything Satan would do to try and interfere, God’s plan for Mary would not be thwarted. Mary would be the mother of the King of Kings, the Messiah, our Savior, Jesus.

Your life is like that of David’s, and of Mary’s, and of so many others.

Now, you’re probably thinking, “I’m no Mary, ” or “How can I compare to David?”

Well, here’s your answer: God’s plan for your life can’t be thwarted either. Try as he might, Satan cannot change the will of God.

Don’t Let That Dragon Deceive You

Just as David and Mary did not know the role they would play in God’s eternal plan, you may be living in a period right now where you have no idea what God’s plan for you is. Maybe you’re trying desperately to figure out what that is. Maybe it’s never crossed your mind. Maybe you’re experiencing doubt that what you are doing is what God has planned for you, and maybe you rest assured that you are fulfilling the will of God in your life.

As we mature spiritually, it becomes a desire to fulfill God’s will and live according to His plan. It’s natural then, to examine our lives – we should, really, from time to time. Take heed to the voices you listen to, however. Is God speaking to you, or is that old dragon, Satan, trying to deceive you? Pray and study the scriptures. The Holy Spirit will give you the answer.

We all have doubts – that comes with this bag of flesh we live in – but we have a firm foundation to stand on. A solid rock to cling to. So, we don’t have to live in doubt or fear. You might visit those places, but you don’t have to live there.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding, (Proverbs 3:5).

The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom should I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—whom should I dread? (Psalm 27:1)

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart, (Jeremiah 29:11-13).

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock(Matthew 7:24-25).

If you find yourself all twisted up in the search for God’s plan for your life, you need to just back off and take a deep breath. He’s the One in control. Stop trying to do it for Him.

Be still, and know that I am God.

Psalm 46:10

Stay focused on Jesus. Keep building your relationship with Him and allow Him to flow through you. Let your heart be full of His love. Find rest in these things and He will lead you.

Slaying the Dragon

Remember, we stand from a point of victory. Christ overcame death and the grave, and in so doing, paved the path of salvation the whole world could travel, (Romans 6:9-14).

Satan wants to interfere with God’s plan. He wants to deceive all mankind. He’s a liar, in fact, he’s the Father of Lies, (John 8:44). AND…he’s a total loser.

Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain.  And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while, (Revelation 20:1-3).

John tells us just a few verses later how Satan and his army will be defeated.

…fire came down from heaven and consumed them, and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever, (Revelation 20:9-10).

God is the Dragon Slayer. Despite all the chaos, despite the doubt, despite the turmoil, despite the sin, despite the unbelief, despite anything Satan will do to try and interfere, God’s plan will not be thwarted.

You can slay the dragon in your life too, through Him. Romans 6:14; 1 Corinthians 10:13; 2 Corinthians 5:17; James 4:7-10.
