Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, That I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah, (Jeremiah 31:31).
Christmas is merry indeed. It’s the season the world remembers and celebrates the birth of Christ. The fulfillment of God’s promise to His people to make a new covenant with them. Jesus is the new covenant.
The old covenant was established after God brought His people out of bondage in Egypt. It was part of a process of understanding who God is, but from the Garden, God intended to send His Son to us, (Genesis 3:15).
The old covenant depended on man keeping God’s law, but no matter how hard man tried, he was not able to do this. So, every year, the sacrifices continued to atone for the sins of man. It was not perfect.
For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second, (Hebrews 8:7).
Through the prophet, Jeremiah, the Lord declared of the coming new covenant:
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers In the day that I took them by the hand To bring them out of the land of Egypt; Which my covenant they brake, Although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, And write it in their hearts; And will be their God, And they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: For they shall all know me, From the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: For I will forgive their iniquity, And I will remember their sin no more, (Jeremiah 31:32-34).
The new covenant would not be like the old one. God’s law would be written in our hearts, each follower would know HIm personally, and our sins would not require continuous sacrifices for they would be forgiven. God’s plan to establish the new covenant was to send His Son. Jesus fulfilled the old covenant (Matthew 5:17) and saved mankind through His perfect sacrifice (Romans 10:4-10). Through Him, the Holy Spirit dwells within believers today, enabling us to know Him personally and writing His law on our hearts.
Since I was a child, one of my favorite parts of Christmas has always been the lights. I still get so excited to see all the beautiful lights this time of year. I love the houses with lights adorning every inch of their property. I’m drawn to the light, like so many are during the Christmas season. It connects me to the most beautiful light of all and what we should all be remembering – Jesus is the Light of the World. God promised this light, and He fulfilled His promise.
This year, I’ve been focused on God’s goodness, faithfulness, and unending love for us. For me, Christmas is a reminder of how God keeps His promises. Christmas is merry indeed.
If you don’t know Jesus as your personal Savior, call upon Him now and let His light fill your soul. He will. It is a promise from God.
