GOD BEFORE COFFEE
Seems simple enough, right? Proverbs 3:6, “In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” The bible is full of verses teaching us to put God first in our lives. Yet for many Christians, this idea, this way of life, just seems weird, foreign, or unrealistic in some way. Only “Jesus Freaks” live like that. However, that is exactly what God means for all Christians to do. Put Him first. Not second. Not third. Not somewhere in between our work, all the little league sporting events we attend, all our Girls-Nights-Out, our trips to the salon, our this-that-and-the-other.
The Lord had to bring me to my knees before I finally understood. I’ve lost many things in the process, but I have gained EVERYTHING in developing my relationship with God. The things that I have lost are just things of this world. Things of man. Materialistic things. “So if you have been raised with the Messiah, seek what is above, where the Messiah is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on what is above, not on what is on the earth.” Colossians 3:1-2 This world is not my home. I’m just passing through here on my way to an eternity with the Lord. As we are told in Hebrews 13, “For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.” The reality is, what I lost cannot even begin to compare what I found and what awaits me.
It took me almost 35 years to figure out how to put God first. I am here to tell you my friend, my life has never been so blessed, so full, so truly magnificent. My amazing husband coined the term, “God before coffee”, that has become my mantra. Thank you my dear, and thank you God for allowing me to finally understand what it means to put You first.
